Support SITRABI Banana union in Guatemala (2000)

The banana union SITRABI is the oldest and arguably the strongest private sector union in Guatemala. Last October, after a massive firing of 913 workers, the executive committee of SITRABI and twenty other unionists were forced to flee the eastern town of Morales by a band of 200 well armed men. Due to international consumer and trade pressure, Del Monte and the International Union of Food and Allied Workers negotiated a political agreement supporting the reinstatement of the workers and their right to affiliate freely to SITRABI. International pressure has helped bring the local subsidiary of Del Monte, Bandegua, to the table. The union and Bandegua have negotiated a new collective bargaining agreement but the legal case against the assailants is still pending. For more information on the campaign, go to the Campaign for Labor Rights web site.
