Immigration, Organizing and Solidarity: Women Organizing for Labor Justice Across Borders
STITCH Women's Language School Delegation June 7 – June 14, 2008 •
Over
the past year, Immigration has become one of the major political issues
in the United States . Yet, rarely do we hear about the lives of the people
who are coming to this country. Learn more about their struggles to build
unions and create better jobs and the violence and horrible conditions
that force them to leave. Join STITCH in Central America to learn about the lives of our union sisters in Central American and improve your Spanish skills, and how to unite with immigrants to challenge unfair immigration and workplace policies that harm all working people!

This
delegation is open to women only. The cost of the delegation is $850 and
includes housing, all meals, language instruction, and travel inside Guatemala
. Participants must pay their own way to Guatemala City and cover incidental
costs such as snacks and tips. Limited scholarships may be available—union
women and women of color will be given priority..
You will spend five mornings learning Spanish with one-on-one instruction
at a well-respected school in the colonial town of Antigua, Guatemala.
In the afternoons, you will meet with women fighting for better conditions
in the booming textile industry, globalization activists, and local union
leaders. In the final days of the delegation, we will travel to the banana
plantations in Eastern Guatemala to hear from workers affected by U.S.
corporate policies and to explore our own roles as consumers and activists.
The delegation will broaden your understanding of globalization; give
you new insights from activists in Central America; and strengthen your
ability to connect worker struggles at home and abroad.
Many past members of the STITCH language school delegation take action upon their return to the United States. Below are some links to their stories and activism over the past few years. Links:
